Today I had my final class of my 4-year journey through the University education. These last couple of hours were interesting, educating and laid-back. Roger from Circle IT came along and spoke about his IT business based in Wales. Also, Lissa treated us with some juice, chocolate and crisps. Overall, it was interesting to learn about Roger’s journey and fun to interact with each other after the presentation.
Roger started Circle IT 12 years ago and his business is growing ever since. It is now on approximately £10m yearly turnover. They offer IT solutions for various small and big business. IT solutions on offer include consultancy, networking, infrastructure and managing solutions (IT security, strategy, etc.). This is an interesting area which is constantly growing. Businesses tend to outsource their IT processes because it is often hard and expensive to produce and run them in-house, and opportunities for outsourcing are often cheaper, quicker and better. The University of Dundee became Circle IT’s biggest client with a contract worth £4m. Circle IT have overtaken both their soft and hardware processes and requirements from the IT perspective.
Roger’s journey is as interesting as his business. He left school at a very young age and decided to take up farming. However, due to unforeseen changes tailored by the British government, farming became an unprofitable and unsustainable branch of business. Realising that he had no credentials or skills useful in the market at the time, he went back to school with an aim to get a 'half-decent paying job' thereafter. It worked out slightly differently for him. With IT industry growing and having a good network he managed to close some deals with big clients based in Wales. This helped him start his company and build on from there. The company growth is purely organic and their future goals are to continue to follow the market and grow with it.
After such an interesting life story, we were given the rest of the time to chat with each other and help ourselves with some snacks. Most topics were tied around our future and how everyone is struggling to find a graduate job. Likewise, exams and other work that still has to be handed in were discussed. It is a huge relief to be finally finished with something so important and long lasting, but the things that follow is actually what will define most of our lives.
