First class honours

A few days ago, my peers and I finally found out our degree classifications. Even though I expected it, it was still good to get the confirmation that I will be receiving a first class honours degree. A lot has changed in the past 4 years. I have grown to be a better person, I perfected my knowledge and use of English, I saw and experienced a new part of the world, but most of all, I met amazing people who I hope to stay in touch with.

Last year, I was able to earn As for all my modules. I worked hard for it and was always motivated to do my best. The schedule of the exams seemed great, I felt confident and the only thing left was to show that on those 5 exams. By earning 5 As I made a huge step towards getting a first class honours degree. Such a big step that at one point during my 4th year, I realised that the motivation that was fuelling me until then was slowly fading away. I was feeling comfortable with what I was doing for university and even though I still don’t know the final grades, I think they won’t be as good as last year. A couple of days to go and I’ll find out.

But what I want to focus on know is the diminishing value of a university degree (I had a funny photo for this but somehow it got deleted from where I found it and I can’t find it anywhere else :(, now you've got this lame picture, sorry). The world is changing faster than we realise. The changes that took place throughout last four years greatly changed the world of education. Don’t get me wrong, education is still a huge part of most people’s lives but as more people are getting degrees, the world requires new selection ways. Solely having a university degree before made you an exception. Now to get to that level you need much more than just a first class degree. Work experience and volunteering are important, the involvement in different societies is very helpful as well as your online presence.

The world never stops and neither should you. I am currently in a weird situation where I have an unclear idea of what my next step should be. However, in past 8 years, I was smart enough not to rely only on formal education. I know that results don’t instantly surface and that it sometimes takes the time to get what you want even if you do everything right. Therefore, I can conclude by saying that the next few months will be interesting and challenging. The thing that makes me motivated and determined to push forward is a high likelihood that I will see the fruits of my work very soon. It doesn’t have to be a major success; all I am expecting and aiming for now is a step in the right direction, any direction. Because when that happens, I can clearly design my end goal, follow the vision and set milestones on the road. No real progress can be made without a clear path. Sometimes it takes time for that clear path to show and uncertain periods in your life may last longer than you’d like. But know now, if you keep moving you’ll find what you’re looking for. And when you do find that one path, use all that frustration and uncertainty that was piling up to motivate yourself work towards that new goal.
